More about this unique property…

We found Hillman Retreat House when looking for a lakeside vacation property for our family, and although we never imagined taking on a project this big, once we walked through it we couldn’t let it go.

Although the house needed a lot of cosmetic work, the structure and bones were strong. The energy of the space felt warm and inviting, and we were so inspired by the stories of community gatherings that have happened here over the years.

The house was built in 1925 as a mission house for the Holy Family Catholic Church, and for many years it housed priests, Christian Brothers, and occasionally members of the community. They held Sunday school classes in the upper level, and we know at least one baby was born in the house (which we think is pretty magical).

They added a recreation center in the 1940’s which is now an event space that’s part of our property. Local kids played basketball and roller skated there, and many school dances, weddings, and parties were hosted in that space.

We have several historical photos of the property featured in the house, so you can take a peek at them during your stay.
